Social Housing Trust Acts Fast – First Tenants Move In

Two older Ashburton residents have new rental homes thanks to the Ashburton Housing and Support Trust moving quickly since its formation.

The Trust was formed earlier this year with assistance from Presbyterian Support Upper South Island; in June it purchased nine villas at the Cameron Courts Retirement Village. This month two older people moved into the first two villas to become available. As the remaining seven villas are vacated, more older local people in need of affordable rental housing will be accommodated.

“The trust is aware that many over 60s struggle to find affordable rental accommodation. With a local organisation in the mix, that accommodation can be provided by locals who will ensure both the properties and the individuals are well looked after,” said Jackie Girvan, a trustee and spokesperson. “We believe housing is not just a government issue it’s a community issue too.

The Ashburton Housing and Support Trust is funded through Presbyterian Support USI, Mackenzie Charitable Foundation, Community trust of Mid and South Canterbury, Trevor Wilson Charitable Trust, and a large private donor.
