Six West Coast students to benefit from Dennis Moore Memorial Scholarship

Presbyterian Support (Upper South Island) has announced the 2018 winners of the Dennis Moore Memorial Scholarship.

They are Jethro Tighe, Hannah Forbes, Cain Liang, Brittany Rea, and Holly Guthrie of Buller High School; and Alex Foster of Westland High School.

There were 21 applicants for the scholarships this year, and due to their high quality six scholarships were awarded. The winners stood out from their peers for their combination of outstanding academic results, leadership potential, and involvement in the life of their school and community.

In line with Rev. Dennis Moore’s values and concern for West Coast young people, each year the Dennis Moore Memorial Scholarship puts $10,000 towards further study for West Coast young people whose personal or financial circumstances restrict their ability to enter tertiary education. The $10,000 is shared between the Scholarship winners.

Over 80 West Coast young people have been supported in tertiary education through the Scholarship since it began in 2000.

The six winners will formally receive their scholarships at the Presbyterian Support (Upper South Island) Annual Meeting to be held at 1:15pm on Thursday, 25 October 2018 at the Uniting Church, 203 Tainui Street, Greymouth.

Presbyterian Support (Upper South Island) is a social services organization. We have two service groups: Family Works (for children and families) and Enliven (for older people).

PSUSI supports children, young people, families and older people in Nelson, Marlborough, West Coast, North Canterbury, Christchurch, Selwyn, and Mid-Canterbury.

2017 winner Joshua Nicholls of Buller High said of his Scholarship funds, “I was so happy to not be limited.”
