Donald and Jean - A life shared with love

For many years, Donald and Jean were part of our North Canterbury Totara Club whanau. They came each week with warm smiles, gentle humour, and a kindness that made everyone feel at home.

Donald loved a good chat and a quiz challenge, while Jean's caring nature and gentle laugh made her a friend to everyone. Earlier this year, we celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary with laughter, stories, and a special poem written by the team.

The poem shared their journey from Scotland to Aotearoa, and the life they built together filled with love, service, and community.

The heart of the club

Donald first joined our Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (CST) programme, which helps support memory, thinking, and conversation for people living with mild to moderate dementia. Through friendly discussion, puzzles, and shared memories, CST helps people feel more confident, connected, and valued.

Donald's curiosity and quick wit made him a natural in the group, and before long, Jean joined him at the Totara Club too. Totara Club is one of our Enliven day programmes where older people come together to enjoy friendship, activities, and time in their community.

Donald and Jean became part of the heart of the Club, sharing morning tea with friends and brightening every day with their warmth and laughter.

In late September, we were deeply saddened by Donald's passing. Jean has since moved into long-term care, but their love and the joy they brought to others will always be remembered.

As Jo, one of our facilitators, shared, "It was such a privilege to spend time with them both. Their love and friendship were an inspiration to everyone who knew them."
