Keeping Community at Heart

03 December 2025
Bequest Doug Grierson

Doug spent his life caring for others, quietly and gently, with a genuine curiosity for people’s stories. He helped build communities where everyone felt they belonged.

Born and raised on a North Island farm, Doug carried with him the values of hard work, kindness, and service. After studying in Dunedin in the 1960s, he began what became a lifetime of walking alongside others through life’s challenges and joys.

As a Presbyterian Minister, Doug served in towns and rural communities across Aotearoa, from Auckland to Oamaru, Twizel to Greymouth. He was known for his compassion, his listening ear, and the calm, reassuring presence he brought to every conversation.

Doug found joy in the simple things that connect us all — conversation, music, poetry, and laughter shared over a meal. He kept bees, wrote verse, and cherished time outdoors. Wherever he went, he left behind warmth, friendship, and care.

His kindness continues

For more than fifty years, Doug supported Presbyterian Support Upper South Island with regular donations. His giving was never about recognition, it was about helping others live with dignity and wellbeing. His final act of generosity, a legacy bequest, continues that same spirit of compassion.

Today, Doug’s kindness lives on through Enliven, helping older people across the Upper South Island stay active, supported, and part of their communities. His gift ensures others continue to feel valued, connected, and cared for.

He is fondly remembered by his children, Kim, Calum, and Erin, who describe him as thoughtful, humble, and deeply caring. Doug’s life was a quiet example of what it means to give from the heart. We are deeply grateful for the love he shared and for the lasting difference his generosity will continue to make.
