Where friendship feels like home

Younger Onset Dementia HomeShare

Every week the kettle goes on, the chairs are pulled close, and laughter fills Jackie's home.

Cath*, Will*, Linda*, and two others gather not just for a cuppa and a chat, but for connection, understanding, and a place where they truly belong. For those living with younger-onset dementia, life can be challenging.

Many are still working, raising children, or supporting their whanau, so symptoms like memory loss or disorientation can feel especially isolating. Everyday tasks such as shopping or socialising may become overwhelming, and most services are designed for older people.

A place to connect and belong

That's why this group matters. It's part of HomeShare, a programme that brings people together in a relaxed, welcoming space. Jackie opens her home each week, creating a place where everyone feels valued and at ease. "It's such a privilege," Jackie says. "We've become like a little whanau. There's always laughter, and everyone looks out for each other."

A circle of support that feels like home

Here, there's no need to explain, only understanding. The group talks about the ups and downs of life and supports each other through moments of worry or frustration. "When I come here, I don't have to pretend," Cath says. "We can just be ourselves. We laugh a lot, and that makes such a difference."

For Cath and the others, these gatherings are the highlight of the week, a place where they feel connected and seen. Because HomeShare isn't just about a meeting, it's about belonging. It's about people caring for one another, no matter what life brings.

Together, we can create moments of calm, laughter, and connection for local whānau.
