National Volunteer Week is held 21 June to 27 June

Behind every hour volunteered is a person helping others feel supported, connected, and cared for. This National Volunteer Week, we caught up with two of our wonderful volunteers, Patsi and Russell, to hear what volunteering means to them and the difference it makes in our communities. Read their stories and join us in celebrating the 203 volunteers who generously give more than 25,000 hours each year.

Driving connection, giving back

Russell Smith - Volunteer Driver, Ashburton

For the past 15 years, Russell Smith has been a familiar and friendly face behind the wheel, helping older people stay connected through our Enliven HomeShare programme. After retiring from a busy career as a Human Resources Manager, Russell knew he wanted to give back to his community. What began as a simple call to explore volunteer opportunities soon turned into years of meaningful service, supporting people to attend social gatherings, share a meal, and enjoy companionship.

“I’ve always loved driving, and I enjoy the interaction,” Russell says. “Volunteering is a great way of giving back and helping others.”

Heart for people, eye for detail

Patsi Swallows - Volunteer Administrator, Rangiora

After celebrating her 75th birthday with an adventurous
trip through Canada, Ireland, Iceland, and England,
Patsi, who grew up in Timaru and now calls Rangiora
home, has embraced volunteering as a way to stay
connected to her community.

After a long career as a maths teacher and exam facilitator, she joined our Rangiora team earlier this year, supporting weekly administration tasks with
curiosity, care, and a willingness to learn.

For Patsi, volunteering is about being part of something
close to home, connecting with people, contributing
where she can, and continuing to grow along the way.

“I’ve still got something to give that others find useful.” “I get to meet all sorts of people, different ages, backgrounds, and experiences, which I love, and it keeps me learning.” - Patsi.

Thank you to our wonderful volunteers!

Through their time, care, and lived experience, our volunteers help local people feel seen, heard, and connected. Whether they have given a few hours or many years of service, we are deeply grateful for their ongoing contribution, kindness, and commitment to supporting people and strengthening communities.

Whether you can give a few hours a week or a little time each month, your kindness could make a real difference in someone’s life.

Join our volunteer team and help support local people.
